Go to Field Trips for the schedule of field trip events.

There is no KGMS General Meeting in July

8th — Tour the ledges at Grand Ledge and the fossils at Brick Park. This is part of KGMS’ Coffee and Doughnuts study group. We will meet at the big shelter at 10am for coffee and doughnuts, a brief lecture and be supplied with a field guide before we tour the area. KGMS and WSU Geology Grad student Jay Kim will lead us in an exploration of the Ledges at Grand Ledge county park. Bring a dish to pass and join us for a picnic lunch after the Fitzgerald Park tour.

Update from Jay — Today I took a trip up to Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge to scope out the field sites… I would like to note that there was a $5 per vehicle entry fee for non-Eaton County residents. I highly recommend bringing a large water bottle for hydration. After hiking on the trail for less than 30 min I was parched.

Anyway, the trails I plan to take are in excellent condition; however, they go through some hilly terrain and some areas contain steep wooden staircases people will have to traverse. There is one outcrop that is located after walking across a steep and slippery hill. Some people may have trouble accessing this outcrop up close so I have located an area people can still see the outcrop while I talk about it. I can then ask if some people (at their own risk) wanted to follow to the outcrop for a closer look.
Here is my tentative plan for the day:
9:00 AM Meet up in a gazebo at the park for coffee and donuts
9:15AM-9:45AM Lecture on the geological and anthropological history of the area
9:45AM-10:00AM 15 minute break for people to use bathrooms
10:00AM-01:00PM (or later) Visit the five geological sites I have chosen to look at while giving small lectures at each site.

The park also has some nice river geomorphological features I will work into my lectures.

This event is held each year to put together things for the show, such as mine bags, egg carton collections, bagging game prizes, … Usually we work 3 to 4 hours and then have a pot luck lunch, so we will not eat until 1:00 or 2:00 pm (No eats until we get our work done). Please bring a dish to pass, the Club will provide the main course. There are plenty of electric plugs for use, but not an oven, so please prepare accordingly. A Board Meeting will be held after lunch, all members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Other things you may want to bring are a chair and beverage (water will be available).
