Field Trips

KGMS members in good standing (dues must be paid) can participate in collecting field trips.


  • Standard safety equipment required (hardhats, steel toe boots, safety vests, safety glasses)
  • Be on time for escorted field trips. If you are late, you will not be allowed on the trip
  • Some field trips may have additional rules (e.g. mines)

Agate Symposium in Cedarburg, WI

This is not a field trip but several members will be attending the quadrennial Agate Symposium and/or Show.

2016 Field Trips:

Our Annual Trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Our trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is centered on shows and field trips hosted by local clubs.

We understand that everyone has a different schedule. Please feel free to come and leave as you like.

Dates August 5, 2016 (Friday) – Aug 7, 2016 (Sunday)
Host Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club
Location Ishpeming, MI (Iron Country)
Lodging There are a lot of choices and you may stay where you wish. Most of our members stay at the Country Village Resort. which includes multiple accomodation levels: tent, RV, cabin and hotel
Details The Ishpeming club’s schedule typically consists of:

  • Friday morning – a field trip to the Republic Mine for specular hematite and banded iron formation
  • Saturday – their show
  • Sunday – a field trip to the Lindbergh quarry for Kona dolomite

Note: On Thursday, we will get together for a 6:30 PM kick-off dinner at the Jasper Ridge Brewery which is located in the Country Village Resort.

Lodging There are a lot of choices and you may stay where you wish. Most of our members stay at the Hancock City Campground. which includes RV and tent camping. There are also hotels and motels in the area.

Our Annual Trip To Alpena, MI

Please note that this year in addition to our usual field trip to the Lafarge Quarry on Saturday we are also hosting an educational (i.e. non-collecting) tour of Michigan karst geology on Friday. Please feel free to attend one or both of the events.

Items This is not a collecting field trip.
Details We will caravan to the following karst features (click the image below to view using Google Maps).

  1. Start at Stephens and twin sinkholes (45min viewing?)
    • Has an old one holer for bathroom but usually no TP (I’ll bring a roll or two)
  2. Stop and walk mystery valley (roughly 45-1¼ hour to walk?)
  3. See the calcite quarry from overlook spot (20min) then do a drive-by
  4. Silver creek springs
    • Tight parking, disappearing and appearing stream
  5. Ocqueoc Falls DNR path (30min?)
    • Bathrooms
  6. Cross over to Rainy Lake (15 min)
  7. Shoepac lake sinkholes (hour?)
    • Has a rustic bathroom
  8. *Optional chain of sink hole lakes in the Pigeon River Country if interested.

Field trip to Lafarge Quarry

Long pants, sturdy boots, hard hats and safety glasses are required for this field trip

IMPORTANT: Be on time. This is an escorted field trip and everyone MUST enter the quarry as a group and remain with the group.
