Field Trips

KGMS members in good standing (dues must be paid) can participate in collecting field trips.


  • Standard safety equipment required (hardhats, steel toe boots, safety vests, safety glasses)
  • Be on time for escorted field trips. If you are late, you will not be allowed on the trip
  • Some field trips may have additional rules (e.g. mines)

Agate Symposium in Cedarburg, WI

This is not a field trip but several members will be attending the quadrennial Agate Symposium and/or Show.

Our Annual Trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Our trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is centered on shows and field trips hosted by local clubs.

We understand that everyone has a different schedule. Please feel free to come and leave as you like.

Dates August 5, 2016 (Friday) – Aug 7, 2016 (Sunday)
Host Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club
Location Ishpeming, MI (Iron Country)
Lodging There are a lot of choices and you may stay where you wish. Most of our members stay at the Country Village Resort. which includes multiple accomodation levels: tent, RV, cabin and hotel
Details The Ishpeming club’s schedule typically consists of:

  • Friday morning – a field trip to the Republic Mine for specular hematite and banded iron formation
  • Saturday – their show
  • Sunday – a field trip to the Lindbergh quarry for Kona dolomite

Location Hancock, MI (Copper Country)
Lodging There are a lot of choices and you may stay where you wish. Most of our members stay at the Hancock City Campground. which includes RV and tent camping. There are also hotels and motels in the area.

If you would like to attend one of the Keweenaw Mineral Days field trips, please register and sign up for field trips on their web site. Many sites are only accessible through their field trips.

Saturday, Oct 1, 2014 (tentative) – Lafarge Quarry, Alpena, MI

Location There are a few different Lafarge parking lots. Please meet at this one.
Items All kinds of fossils
Long pants, sturdy boots, hard hats and safety glasses are required for this field trip
IMPORTANT: Be on time. This is an escorted field trip and everyone MUST enter the quarry as a group and remain with the group.

October (not yet scheduled) – Byholt Quarry, Schoolcraft, MI

Host Kalamazoo Geological & Mineral Society

The pit may be operational that day so please arrive no more that 15 minutes early – if possible.

Please park on the side of the road at the gate and wait for directions. The fee per person is $5 or $7 per family. I hope that this is an easy way we can show appreciation for the opportunity.

Please use common sense for the proper attire for the conditions and a hard hat,boots and bright safety vest are required. We can collect as much as we can carry out or as large as we can fit in a truck.
